Students in my school have big hearts and growing minds. We make up a caring community in a Title 1 elementary school. Despite the lack of resources we have access to, I want to ensure they have everything they need in order to be successful in their academic and personal lives.
My students will be college-ready scholars and able to use their creativity, imagination and knowledge to help the world.
With your help, we can build this future for these students.
My Project
I want students to always have access to a comfortable reading area and culturally-responsive books that show aspects of who they are to build their self-confidence and understand that there isn't just one narrative to tell.
Students come from all walks of life; with different cultures, identities, family structures, traditions and other intersectionalities.
I chose books with protagonists of color that show different backgrounds such as Filipino and Korean cooking, Indian traditions and two-home families. I also chose high-interest books that students can relate to in their home and school lives.
Flexible seating will allow for students to read comfortably in the book nook the way they do outside of school. The space can accommodate laying down on a pillow, sitting in a comfortable chair or at a desk. There will be recommended books on display for both primary and upper elementary students to discover and explore. I want students to be able to engage with books at their comfort level, while having access to rich, critical literacy books.
