This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We are working hard to grow 2 years in reading! My 31 scholars decided that growing 1 year wasn't enough to combat the achievement gap, but we need more leveled books in our library that inspire, motivate, and challenge us!

I am a 4th grade teacher at a Title I school composed of African American and Latino students.

The majority of my scholars qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and are of low socio-economic background. They live in a community plagued with gang violence, drug abuse, and unemployment. However, my students come to school daily- ready to work hard, get smart, and make COLLEGE FOR CERTAIN!

My Project

To make sure students are growing, scholars and I meet daily in leveled guided reading groups, literature circles, and individual book conferences. We practice reading daily in the classroom and at home. However, we need more leveled books that engage and interest scholars!

We need GREAT BOOKS!

In a class survey, students asked for the following books to be added to the leveled library: Artemis Fowl, Judy Moody, Magic School Bus,& Captain Underpants. It is my hope that by adding these high interest books to our leveled library, it will continue to motivate and move my students to higher levels of comprehension and appreciation.
