My students need books they want to read. They love graphic novels. They need books for literature circles and picture books to help them make connections in math.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher at a title one school. My students want to be at school and want to learn despite thier environmental obstacles. I meet my students where they are not where I think they should be.
I have five years of behavior experience and understand the importance of teaching the student not the curriculum.
My students come to me with little independence or confidence and it is my job to build them into productive members of society.
My Project
As mentioned in my profile, my campus is a Title 1 campus and my students come to me with gaps in every subject. One gap we try to close during their time with me is... reading. We also know that in the 5th grade if they cannot read with fluency and stamina they cannot complete math word problems or any other subject's independent work with accuracy that shows their full potential. We aspire as a class to foster a love of reading. I am a firm believer that it does not matter what they are reading as long as they are reading. My students love graphic novels, boys and girls! They love the new Babysitter's Club books and Dog Man. Also, incorporating reading into all subjects gives them multiple opportunities to make connections. Many of the books in this project are math picture books that will help give students another way to picture math concepts.
My theory is that if a student can read and love to read they can do anything!
