I teach a 4th grade class with diverse educational levels and abilities. Over half of our students come from lower economic homes. This class is starting with needed progress and growth especially in reading. I have a mix of students at a variety of levels.
Fifty-five percent of my students have started the year below benchmark levels in reading.
This is a lower class than many I have worked with. They need time reading texts that they are motivated to read.
Our class is working very hard at making growth as we redo our curriculum pieces to focus more on non-fiction. My 12 boys and 12 girls are excited for new opportunities to read!
My Project
Our current fourth grade library is based on the books that I grew up with that I have brought to school and books donated by other teachers. The majorities of the copies are in older covers and books that are falling apart.
Our kids need book love to motivate them to read and learn, engaging in different types of reading.
Our class focus this year is to create a reading friendly classroom. I spent the summer getting shelves for books, displays for books, and creating a reading friendly room to increase our love for reading.
