Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Pre-Kindergarten children at a public school. There are 36 children in our program, which consists of two classes. Our children are creative, inquisitive, loquacious, and independent. They love to express themselves through play. They love to express themselves through creative outlets such as painting and dancing. Our children love to read, and make up their own stories as they enjoy books throughout the day.
Our school is located in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Our school is a title one school. Due to this, sometimes resources are not available for us to purchase items needed to our classrooms. Most of our students come from low income households. Despite their hardships, they come to school every day with smiles on their faces and they are eager for a day of exploration, discovery and learning. We are here ready to receive them to guide their journeys of knowledge.
My Project
The books we are asking for would enrich the lives of our students on a daily basis. This is because these books are the foundational and supplemental texts that we need to support our curriculum. Our students encounter books everywhere they turn. Books are present in every center. These books will give them the jump start to acquire vocabulary, ideas and knowledge about the themes we learn about throughout the year. Many of the books we had have been misplaced. In addition, a lot of them are worn out from years of use by both children and staff members.
Our students enjoy the books we currently have to create their own stories.
Exposure to books gives our young learners a head start on letter recognition, comprehension skills, vocabulary acquisition and phonological awareness. These foundational and supplemental texts are imperative to our curriculum. We want the best for our young learners. We want to give them the foundation for what we hope will be their developing love for reading.
