I teach in a very diverse, low socio-economic area of an urban city. My middle schoolers are always teaching me something new. From dance moves to ethnic food choices, my students are always bringing something unique to the table.
Their backgrounds and culture define who they are, yet my students want to be seen as more in the world.
My kids are forever impacting the way I teach, and they continually challenge me to try new things to deepen their understanding and love of school.
My Project
My students crave books with characters and setting they can relate to. I am seeking enough books for students to be reading the same great novels to spark great discussions.
Authors like Nic Stone and Jason Reynolds quench the thirst of my urban readers.
The incredible stories that unfold in the pages of their books create authentic conversations that I couldn't do alone in my classroom. My students love rap, music, shoes, dancing, good food, family time, social media, and their friends. These ten stories resonate with their own lives and pull them in a literary trance. They crave more from these authors.
These new releases will help satisfy my students' need for authentic literature.
