This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is an urban high school in Pine Bluff, Arkansas serving approximately 900 students. We are a Title 1 school. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse talents and learning styles. Our school has consistently struggled over the years to significantly increase literacy scores.
In a world of Netflix, tech gadgets, and academic pursuits, my students are voluntary readers who have expressed an interest in reading for pleasure and in sharing their love of books with others.
As a librarian, my goal is to create reading experiences that support student interest, support our schools literacy goals and support life-long reading.
My Project
My students need these books to read during book club. The books will be used in an effort to build the students personal book shelves. My students are all voluntary readers who have expressed an interest in sharing their love of books with others. This book club is one of the largest school-wide literacy opportunities. It engages students from ninth to twelfth grade.
Club members are students who become book influencers within our school.
After a book talk on the state's Teen Book Award nominees our members voted on the books that they wanted to read this semester. The book club will participate in two meetings a month to discuss books being read, to plan book activities and to support literacy awareness in our school.
