My students need more high-interest books! We got our last order in, and books have already flown off the shelves at a rate I can hardly keep up with. What a great problem to have!
In my English I classroom, students discover themselves as avid readers and writers who can tell the world their stories. Many of my students shyly express an appreciation of literature and writing, but they often perform below grade level in these areas. Despite this, I have found that they make great strides in their performance throughout the year. They impress me daily with their hard work as I hold them to high expectations.
I work with fabulous kids, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
I serve students of varied needs, including English language learners and special needs students. Regardless of their background, my students share an eagerness to learn and excitement about finding their own paths to success.
My Project
My students have been reading more than ever thanks to our last project! Most of them had never held a brand new book before; what a powerful experience that was! However, our collection is already dwindling as students take books home to indulge in. So, we are in need of a few more titles to round out our collection and provide engaging options for each and every student. In this project, I have chosen books that are both relevant to my students' lives and highly engaging. I conducted thorough research via global best-sellers lists and peer-reviewed recommendations in addition to student requests, which led me to select each title.
Our diagnostic reading test results came back recently, and they indicate that my students are currently at a great disadvantage, mostly due to lack of access.
As such, I have "prescribed" each student with a book to read for 15 minutes a night for the next 5 weeks, until we take our next assessment. The books listed here will allow me to give each and every student a book to read nightly that is both relevant and engaging to them personally.
