This year, our school implemented a Book Explorers group for students that were delayed in their pre-academic skills. The group meets once a week and the lessons surround a different book each month. As part of the group, parents are given a monthly newsletter with follow up activities to encourage parents to participate in their children's education. We also have an end of the year party to recognize parents as valued educators. The students love this group and become very familiar with the books we read. To further promote literacy at home, we would like to provide each child with a copy of the book to take home and keep. We funded this project with a local grant this year, which is only available to us one time. To provide another group of children with this same experience we need to pursue a different funding source. On a follow up survey one parent commented that her daughter loved the group and had created her own little library at home with her books. She loved to read them with the rest of the family. This has been such a valuable learning experience for children and their families, and we really want to be able to continue this program at the same level next year. We require additional funding to provide the students with books to promote home literacy. We use high interest books that the children become familiar with so that they may participate in the reading process at home. Our book selection was made to include repetitive, rhyming, and story formats necessary to the development of early literacy skills. We also included books with science, music, math, and multicultural themes so that activities provide a large range of experiences. The students have experienced such excitement and pride over the books they take home that we want to see this continue for another year and another group of children in need of positive literacy experiences.
