My students LOVE books! We just don't have the shelving available to display the inviting covers of the books we already have.
My 15 Kindergarten students live in a small town of 3800 people.
Our school consists of Pre-K through grade 5. Our families are mostly blue collar hard working people who support their school. Our school budget has taken a big hit over the past few years due to our economic crisis. This is our first year implementing an all day Kindergarten program and were fortunate enough to add another classroom and teacher to keep our class sizes to 15 students. I am that lucky teacher! :) I am an experienced educator who taught 4th grade for 12 years in this same school. I just don't have enough age appropriate furniture to give my students the best Kindergarten experience they deserve.
My Project
Currently I have one small book cart that displays books in our classroom library. It does not hold enough books to allow 15 students to make book choices at the same time. In addition I stand hard cover books on a small table to display more. They are always falling down, is easy to get "messy" (according to my 5 year olds), and isn't convenient for soft cover picture books. At this developmental age it is important to have book covers facing the children as opposed to their spines as in a traditional library. With a stand up, wooden book display my students would have easier access to more wonderful books. A book display shelf will promote the love of books for my students which is the foundation of their literacy adventure in years to come.
I am hoping you can help my students experience more books in their classroom!
They love books! To be able to showcase more covers can only encourage their love more! If my Kindergarteners come to school with a new book case filled with colorful, vivid stories to enjoy they will learn the importance of books in their lives.
