Book Crates Are Really Great!

My students need these file crates. The baskets that I currently use have been used for several years and they are falling apart.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The wonderful thing about our school is that we are a Creative Arts Magnet, and we have a lot of flexibility when teaching the students. We are able to streamline our lessons to meet their instructional needs towards their individual learning styles. Over the past few decades, research in the field of learning has led to the discovery of the theory of multiple intelligences. This theory states that each person has different ways of learning and different intelligences that they use in their daily lives. While some can learn very well in a linguistically-based environment (reading and writing), others are better taught through mathematical-logic based learning. Still others benefit most from body-kinesthetic intelligence (learning by doing with the hands). Each person possesses each intelligence to an extent, but there is always a primary, or more dominant, intelligence.

Teaching in a small, close-knit, economically challenged community definitely has its advantages and disadvantages, and I don't take that lightly.

I have been in this district for 16 years, and I already know many of the families that have joined me at the new school.

My Project

These books crates will help organize the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy, I have a beautiful new rug and new beanbag chairs for them to sit in while reading and they can also complete work while sitting in that area and also spend time reading independently! They are thankful for the opportunity to read. But it is hard for them to put the books back in the right place when they are trying to put to many leveled books into a basket that is too small.

With these new crates, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own level and when finished they will be able to put them back into the right place without breaking the basket.

This gives them the opportunity to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books, being organized in the new crates will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already show an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word and further our expectations of keeping a neat and organized area.
