Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located a few miles away from a large metropolitan city. My students' families are working class and usually, both parents work. The families in our community are very involved and want the best for the children and trust the teachers at our school wholeheartedly.
My students are enthusiastic 6th graders who truly enjoy working in groups, using technology and being creative.
80% of my students are English Language Learners and although they might struggle with academic language and correct grammar usage, they are still very inquisitive and persistent in finding answers.
My Project
My students enjoy creating original artwork to go with their original stories. Providing color pencils and markers will encourage them to get even more creative with their cover art. The problem is that their book covers always get wrinkled or torn with continuous reading and handling. Having a laminating machine will help in keeping their book cover intact for months even years to come!
Vivid pictures and laminated artwork will increase the confidence in my students as this will help them see themselves as true authors and illustrators.
Since my students are long-term English Language Learners writing a story has proven to be difficult, however, they are able to portray the theme of their story in their cover art and by making their cover art more sturdy, they can proudly display their work longer.
