My classroom is an area of learning, support, love, and family. I emphasize with my students that they are a family, and they will be treated as such.
With a diverse group of students, each may have a different definition of family and what that means, so I make sure they understand when they are at school they are loved, cared for, respected, and supported by both me and their classmates.
The students I serve come from varying home lives, as we serve our local air force base, rural students, suburban students, and those from high to low socioeconomic backgrounds. Knowing they are cared for and will excel is my goal in my classroom, which is made possible through positive interactions, engaging lessons, and a supportive environment.
My Project
Finding ways to get my students interested in reading and books can be challenging. One way that I have found to get students interested in books is to create 'commercial' book reviews for them. Students will write a book review and turn it into a commercial in order to bring their reading to life.
Allowing students the opportunity to be creative, and turn their book into a commercial, not only teaches them 21st-Century skills but also gets them excited to read.
By having a Macbook, we will be able to record and edit our commercials in a real-world setting. This will get students excited for their opportunity to create a commercial and will help them with skills they will need to live and work in our technology-centered world. By writing a creative commercial that emphasizes the 'high points' in their books, finding others to act in it, create props, etc., students are being asked to think critically and creatively. Students will then need to utilize technology to film and edit their commercials as well as present them to their classmates. By introducing this technology into the hands of my students, we are helping to create the next generation of innovators and technology enthusiasts!
