I am leading a fourth and fifth grade book club that will compete and submit projects to TOME Conference. Many students at our school come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and need all of the resources they can get at school!
I am a Media Specialist needing some help to equip my Book Club with chapter books for my developing readers who need to continue being challenged.
Many of our students come from families without extra money to spend on books, so we are starting this project to get high interest, "IT BOOKS" culturally-relevant books in our students' hands.
My Project
In this project, I have requested a variety of chapter book sets so that I can have multiple copies for students to read during our book clubs. Students will be meeting in groups with their own copy of the same book so that they read individually and discuss their thoughts on the story as it develops. Book clubs have worked successfully in my classroom in the past, and I see a huge benefit in seeing students learn how to discuss with each other about books and being able to share ideas or disagreeing thoughts in appropriate and polite ways. My students will be challenged greatly from books clubs, especially as they grow as readers and thinkers. They will also be competing in a reading bowl and a diverse menu of digital competitions based on the books. In March, they will be able to attend the TOME Conference and meet some of the authors and receive awards.
