Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My English II classroom is a place where students can develop a love of literacy and engage in many authentic reading experiences. In a society dominated by fast-paced, superficial interactions with media, my classroom a place where students are able to take the time to savor a novel, poem, or article.
My energetic, inspiring, and hard-working high school students are primarily Latino and low-income.
The school is in an under-served part of a major metropolitan area of Illinois, and 98% of our kids receive free or reduced lunch. Nearly all of my students are reading several grades below their grade level. Several of my students are English Language Learners. All but a few are bilingual!
My Project
My primary goal as a high school English teacher is to help my students develop into lifelong readers, but there are so many obstacles. Over the years, students have learned to see reading as challenging, dull, and boring. I want to help them see that reading can be exciting, fun, and maybe even easy.
The right book in the hands of the right student has magic powers.
I've done some research, with student input, into some of the best new books that represent the diversity and experiences of the young people I teach, and I'd like your help in making them available. My dream is that these books, read in small book clubs, will help my students see themselves as readers who enjoy the opportunity to read the right book.
