My students are third graders in a rural school in the rolling hills of the Georgia Piedmont. They are full of creativity and full of life. Eight to nine years old is a great age to be and as such, they love to be able to engage in self-directed learning activities.
My third graders greatly enjoy stories and books that they can read independently.
They enjoy being able to self-select stories on their level from many different genres including fiction, fantasy, action/adventure, mystery, humor, and non-fiction.
My Project
These class sets of books will allow our class the opportunity to participate in a whole-class book club throughout the year. Students will be able to enjoy reading and discussing these books together as a whole group. Students will learn from each other in these books clubs and by doing so have their love for literature grow.
With these new books, my students will be able to learn to find the deeper meaning in these stories as we read and talk about them together.
They will be learning not only reading skills and strategies but also the best reason to read-- for the pure enjoyment of it! The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will help my students by doing just that. My students already have shown great interest in reading together in small groups and this project will only help enrich their reading experiences that much more.
