Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classes are comprised of students who have been in the United States for less than 3 years. They are English Language Learners, some of whom speak more than two languages already; English will be their third or fourth or more.
Most will be facing the state mandated English I and English II tests for the first time this year, even with a limited English base.
They are incredibly smart and fun students with bright futures and lots of hope.
My Project
My students need to work together in groups to facilitate second language acquisition. The books on the district reading list are a good place to start. In a Book Club format, students will be able to read and discuss together in class the things that make literature so great.
A variety of reading selections, including biographies, plays, novels, and graphic novels will help them to have true choice in how they pursue learning in class.
Class sets of books allow this to happen without the stress of keeping up with additional materials and supplies on a daily basis. Everything they need is in class, ready to go.
