My students are hardworking, passionate, and they love a challenge. They are a diverse group of eager learners who love to laugh, get messy, and work in teams. Yet, each day when I say, "time to read", I can see over half of my students sinking into their chairs. The torn and wrinkled pages of the very old books in my current library just don't get kids excited.
One way I want to encourage students to become excited about reading is to start book clubs.
Book clubs can encourage students to explore titles they may not gravitate to. It will give them a chance to talk about the books they are reading; practicing their public speaking and allow them to "dig deeper" while analyzing characters and events together as a group.
My Project
These books will allow my students to find their love of books. Every single day we have designated reading time. These books will give students the chance to read a book together, talk about it, and discover the magic of reading together.
Having books clubs in the classroom will change my students' lives by instilling a lifelong love of reading and learning.
Students will have a choice between 3-4 titles to choose from. Together they will read the book bit by bit, each day having the opportunity to talk to each other about what predictions they are making, comparing characters and settings, summarizing their reading, and identifying the theme. Having the opportunity to talk to other students about the book will help increase reading comprehension.
