Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with K-6 students at two schools. Many people perceive that the community I teach in is filled with high-income families, but in fact it it almost the opposite. The students that I work with are learning in spite of their circumstances. Many of them are coming from low income households and multi-family homes.
Students at my schools are learning to love books and reading, and we are working toward creating a lifelong love of reading.
As school communities we are working hard to create a community of readers.
My Project
At my school we use reading levels to help students read at their just right level. That means that in a typical upper grade classroom students can be spanning several grade levels in their reading abilities. In order to give them more autonomy and choice in what they read, we guide them towards leveled books that are appropriate for them.
Book clubs are an important part of our literacy instruction, but it can be difficult to find book sets at appropriate text levels for many students.
By contributing to this fund, students will be offered more appropriate levels for their books clubs. In their clubs, students will discuss the characters, settings, and figurative language that might be present in their books, while they deepen their love of reading.
