Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The children I teach are 5th Graders in Richmond, California. We are a community of 60 inquisitive and dedicated readers that enjoy working together and learning about not only ourselves, but the world, through different books.
My students have realized that we need a multitude of books in the classroom to keep up with their reading life.
While not only are the number of books important, but students have also started to develop their voices to critique the lack of diversity in many books written today.
My students would like to continue cultivating their love of reading with the addition of new books to our classroom library. Many of my students rely on our classroom library to support their daily reading habits, as well as expose them to genres they would not normally read.
My Project
These books will allow students to take ownership over their reading and build a relationship with books that will last a lifetime. The skills learned in book club are some that will support their endeavors in college and beyond. These books will also allow students to read genres they normally would not, at their own reading level.
Books Clubs push students to interact with each other and develop ideas they never would in isolation.
My students already have a strong love for reading, but this will bring it to greater heights. The books I am asking for are also part of a series. This will excite students to continue reading and making connections.
