Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is home to students who read at a variety of different levels. We are implementing book clubs, where each small group of students is challenged at an appropriate level. I'm expecting that giving individual instruction at a specific level will increase reading ability in all students.
In Silicon Valley, my STEAM school serves a truly remarkable group of socioeconomically disadvantaged students who genuinely love to learn.
Despite some of the hardships my students have faced, my class shows up ready to learn every day! They are a very caring bunch and I would love for them to see that other people (some they don't even know) care about them, too!
My Project
With the book sets, I can group children into book clubs based on the students' reading ability and interests. Students will then meet with me to receive more individualized instruction on specific literacy skills. While I'm working with one book club, other students will be working at various centers around the room. For example, at the listening post students will improve their reading by listening to fluent recordings of popular texts. At the word work station students will use manipulatives to blend letters into words, focusing on sight words and specific spelling patterns.
My students appreciate when I am able to provide individual or small group instruction.
They thrive on the attention and really benefit from the skills being taught. These materials will allow me to work with book clubs individually, while the remaining students are engaged in meaningful centers to enhance their literacy skills. I'm hopeful that this process will result in significant reading growth for all students in my classroom.
