My Project

96 Miles by J.L. Esplin is a gripping survival adventure about two brothers, John and Stewart Lockwood, who must trek 96 miles across the Nevada desert after a massive power outage leaves them stranded and alone. With limited supplies, the boys must rely on their father’s strict survival training, and each other, to make it through harsh conditions and unexpected dangers. Along the way, they face physical and emotional challenges that test their bond and force them to grow in resilience and trust.

This book is an excellent choice for 8th-grade middle school book clubs.

It sparks discussions about family, survival ethics, self-reliance, and how crises shape character. Its fast pace and suspenseful plot engage even reluctant readers, while deeper themes offer much for conversation.
