Formal and informal book club meetings among adults have become increasingly popular. As an adult, this is a stimulating and intellectual way to enjoy friends, meet new people, and discuss great literature. It is liberating to express your likes and dislikes about a text or an author. It is for these reasons, that I have established book club meetings in my 5th grade classroom. My students are passionate about reading. It is amazing to witness the viewpoints that students express during book club meetings. I have a diverse class with a vast array of racial and socio-economic backgrounds represented. The unique thoughts that they share with each other about books are truly extraordinary. I have found that students get the most out of book club when they can choose their own books. Unfortuantely, I do not have enough sets of books for my students. I have 32 eager students who want to read and discuss books. I need several sets of 5 books (so for example, I need 5 copies of "The Girl Who Owned a City" by O.T. Nelson in order to offer this book as a choice for Book Club). This would allow me to offer choices to students throughout the year. In addition, I can choose a variety of books to represent a variety of cultures. This will be enpowering for the students in my classroom. The following list includes sample titles I would like to receive (5 of each) for my classroom: The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson Loser by Jerry Spinelli The Gold Cadillac by Mildred Taylor Judy Moody M.D. The Doctor is In by Megan McDonald Marvin Redpost: Kidnapped at Birth? by Louis Sachar Woodsong by Gary Paulsen The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank Please help us fund my 5th grade book club.
