My students are constantly growing, both as learners and as individuals. Each day is unique, as I see them blossoming into incredibly thoughtful, respectful, adventurous young people. Not every day is perfect or clean, but we are real with one another and try to live up to our fullest potential day in and day out.
To honor individuality while promoting literacy, I want to provide more student choice when it comes to reading.
Instead of everyone always reading the same class text, I want to encourage students to choose books that they truly are intrigued by and interested in. I believe my students will benefit from additional choice and increased ownership over their education.
My Project
While class novels are great. However, I believe it is incredibly important that students also have choice reading materials to engage with in the classroom. Book clubs or circles are the perfect way to allow students choice while all engaging in similar thematic discussions.
These books focus on young adults who are struggling to overcome trauma, hardship, or everyday struggles.
In addition to reading these choice novels, the entire class with engage with current event articles, podcasts, and documentaries that explore these complex issues.
Twice per week students will meet with their book clubs to discuss both their specific novel and the additional class materials. This unit will help students develop a sense of independence along with a responsibility to their group and classmates.
I’m looking forward to continuing to develop and expand my curriculum with the help of DonorsChoose!
