I work at a Title I elementary school in Virginia as a literacy specialist. My students are amazing and extremely diverse. Our school is made up of students with 39 different home languages. They come from all different places and with unique experiences. I work with all students, but mainly grades 3-5. Our students have various levels of opportunities and exposure to books.
Our school is truly a model in diversity.
Our student body is diverse, but also every classroom is diverse. Each room has students who are learning English, who might excel in certain areas, and students who are identified for special ed services. We are constantly working to meet the needs of all of our students and hold them to high standards.
My Project
I work at a diverse school and I want the books our students read to reflect that diversity. In 5th grade, we do a Fantasy book club unit were all students get a chance to read and discuss books with their peers. It's amazing how excited kids get when they get the chance to talk about fun books. In order to make this unit happen though, we need books and lots of them!!
The more kids read, the better readers they will be.
When they have books they are excited about they read more. Our goal at my school is to make sure students leave loving books and reading.
