Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students desire to read together and discuss their books together, they are only lacking one thing...books!
My students are second language learners from a low income/high poverty community.
They are self-motivated and excited about learning and bettering themselves. These are bilingual students, learning to read and write in English and Spanish. Most of my students are stronger in Spanish, I would like to develop their English reading and writing skills by providing quality literature in English. This will not only help develop their love and interest in reading, but also build much needed higher level vocabulary in their second language.
My Project
My students and I began an after school book club two weeks ago. My students love this time that we spend together and ask me daily if we are having book club that day. We began our book club with "Because of Winn Dixie" two weeks ago and will be finishing the book this week. A few of my students even took the book home and already finished it on their own. The books I am asking for will allow us to continue with our club, and the joy that my students have found in reading. I am asking for a class set of "The City of Ember." This book will expose my students to a type of book they have not yet experienced and will lead to many topics of conversation. I would like my students to be able to question and think about the world and what should be changed.
My students need the opportunity to read and discuss literature.
They are excited for the opportunity to do just that, however we do not have books for them to read. Since they come from low income homes, I cannot ask them to spend the money they have so little of on books for our club. Please help us to continue our book club and develop language and the love for reading in each of these students.
