Book Club Literature to Explore Diversity and Special Needs
Help me give my students literature that authentically portrays students with autism, attention deficit disorder, and dyslexia. These books would allow middle school book clubs that focus on real issues that impact students every day.
We are a 6-8 school. We have over 60% of our students that receive free and reduced-priced lunch. We provide a high quality education to our students through exceptional instruction, a wide range of programs and activities to enrich student experiences, and by creating a community where students feel safe, connected and prepared to excel.
Our community of about 600 students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
We are a National Demonstration School for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). This is a school-wide program designed to help students prepare for and succeed in college through high expectations and by instilling key life skills and habits.
Students in our classrooms are very diverse. Middle school is a tough time when students are trying to find "their place". Understanding, discussing , and celebrating differences through literature can build student compassion and empathy for each other.
Students are able to see themselves in the characters.
It gives all students a voice. They begin to realize that they aren't alone. They also are able to see how characters find strength and perseverance when overcoming obstacles in life.
Having multiple texts for book clubs allows students choice while giving the group a common topic and idea for discussion. Through Socratic Seminars students are able to ask questions and use evidence from the different texts to support their answers.
