At our Title I school in South Carolina 100% of our students receive free lunch; therefore, parents often don't have the funds to buy books or other basic school supplies. Our families have limited reading and other academic materials at home. However, our parents know when they send them to school, they are getting the best education possible.
Nothing compares to teaching second grade than teaching second grade to a classroom of all girls.
My single-gender girls are an amazing group of young ladies that come to school everyday prepared to put their all into everything they do. With your support, they will have the materials needed to add to their work ethic.
My second grade girls love to read and love to talk about what they are reading. Through reading workshop and book clubs, my girls are able to do both as they grow as readers! However, in order to do this, they need a variety of texts that are on their independent reading levels. They also need enough of each text that several girls can read the same book at the same time independently to come back together to discuss in book clubs.
It is also vital that my girls see themselves in the texts that they read.
The Keena Ford series is a wonderful series about a young second grade girl and her adventures. In one book trouble finds her on a field trip while in another text she gets herself into a mess when she doesn't want to tell the truth. These texts will definitely provide an opportunity for students to see themselves and grow as readers as they discuss within their book clubs.
