As a new teacher at a junior high last year, I enthusiastically developed an after-school Book Club for Girls. This new extracurricular activity was a smashing success, particularly with bilingual and socially-challenged girls who may not have otherwise joined an after-school club. A group of approximately fifteen girls met weekly to discuss book and life related issues of friendship, diversity, peer pressure and determination. This group of girls, representing a plethora of races, languages, religions and ages, put aside their differences as they bonded over great literature.
After conducting an end-of-the-year survey with the book club members, I learned that every single member had enjoyed the book club so much that all want to join again this upcoming school year. While I'm thrilled by their enthusiasm towards reading, I know that without a sufficient number of book copies, the club will not survive. Not only will these books inspire a love of literature in the girls, they will also bring together girls from such varied life situations, reminding them once again that we are more alike than we are different.
Likewise, the girls use the characters and plot lines in the books as a safe conversation starter for their own challenges and struggles. Book Club for Girls empowers girls with both intellectual and emotional stimulation.
With a donation of three book sets, you will make it possible for Book Club for Girls to continue to thrive. I think of the fifteen girls for whom your donation will allow to grow, learn and develop on so many levels, and I thank you deeply for them.
