My students need books they can relate to about their world. These books, 7 titles in sets of 5 copies, will give students a glimpse into the world around them and the world beyond them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students do not live in literate homes. They need to find books they can relate to, so they will be intrigued to read. My students love a good story and they want to have options to read more. They love these award winning books, but we have long waiting list for each one.
My students live in a project area of Texas, many do not leave the concrete of their apartment complexes other than school.
Many will be first graduates in their homes and more than half are from Mexico. My students love to read and basically there is a constant wait for great books we talk about. These are all books my students wait many days to read, because I only have one copy. They are well known and award winners. I believe they all can be captured by a great story and the books I have selected are wonderful stories that will capture their imaginations.
My Project
These books will convince reluctant readers that everyone has a story to tell and there are many just like you in the world. There are stories about students coming back from "juvie" like in the book Rotten. There are stories about homeless children and how that makes them feel like Tyrell. These stories, like Wonder, are for any student who has ever been bullied because of their looks. Everyone deserves a standing ovation at least once in their lives, Be kind is the theme of this great story. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas will take our students back to historic Nazi control and friendships that were never meant to be, yet could have been. My students will love these books and tell others about them, plus they won't have to wait to read them.
As a classroom teacher, I can't influence what is purchased for our students but in a small way.
Having these books in our classroom will help students ready for a book club group, or to help them from having to wait months for one book from the library and my tattered copies. These books will be shared with many students from this point on also and could reach thousands of students through the years.
