Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title I middle school located in North Las Vegas, NV. All of the students at this school receive free and reduced lunch. My average class size is between 35-40 students. My students are from a low-income, under-privledged, under-served area. They strive to work against this adversity. The background that my students have requires a warm learning environment to counter act any negative they may face. They work well in hands-on settings involving lots of group work. My students are not on grade level and this year will be spent helping them get to that level.
My Project
Many of my students have not had the chance to participate in a group that reads and discusses a book. These types of activities can really turn someone into a reader. They have the chance to discuss with each other about their favorite parts, characters, and new discoveries.
The book, Carve the Mark, will change my students, even if it is in a small way.
They will learn about the power our families have in effecting who were are. Then they will see that it is possible to grow as our own person and become the best version of themselves. All while learning about another galaxy and the superhuman powers that are possible there.
We will have several activities to go along with the book. For example, a creative writing project looking into our own special powers. We will also be focusing on how our family effects our personality and how we interact with the world.
