My Students

My students are a diverse group, demographically, culturally and represent seventh, eighth, and ninth graders.

They are a special group of students who love to read and discuss books.

They meet weekly during our Flex time and after school once a week. They are dedicated to completing each book - the titles are chosen by the students with teacher direction and approval, and their discussions are animated and thoughtful.

My Project

Our Book Club fosters a love for reading, and lets our students who love the close study of a book they chose, find like minded students who also want to discuss a book they have all read. I am requesting ten copies each of "Turtles All The Way Down" which gives insight into how mental illness feels and especially how it isolates, and of "Ash: Journeys of the Immortal" which is about a girl meeting legendary creatures.

Our Book Club encourages students' critical thinking, while helping students to build social skills, including empathy, expressing yourself, being present in a conversation and appropriately responding to peers.

These books in particular provide topics for discussion that might not be present in regular conversation - such as mental illness and elements found in a fantasy novel. These books are age appropriate, and we look forward to reading them as a group.
