I work at a Japanese immersion school in Michigan. The students are an eclectic group of language learners from those learning their alphabet to those working above grade level.
At this school students are very engaged and proud as they progress.
Instruction is differentiated to reach all levels of learners in the class. They love to play games and to work independently and in groups. The class is rarely quiet, with productive talking going on in both Japanese and English. The students work hard and are very eager to learn something new.
My Project
Many of the students in my class are very hardworking, advanced readers. They are ready for the next step, book clubs! I have purchased a couple sets of 5 books, and acquired some through Scholastic points. They love it! I would like to purchase book sets and design enough clubs to keep them busy the rest of the year.
Designing book clubs lets the students set their own goals to practice a comprehension strategy.
Book clubs also allow the students to learn from each other. Their discussions turn into peer tutoring, or maybe even questions. They keep each other thinking.
I would love to work with a set of modern books that engage the students. This list of books would be refreshingly new to the students and really something to talk about.
