Our classroom is a room of children from different countries, different cultures, and speaking different languages, a room of children with two parents, one parent, or no parent to support them, a room of children coming to school to learn, some to escape, but all to be loved.
Many countries are represented within our school with non English speaking families, a high percentage qualifying for free or reduced price lunch, and many living in unsafe conditions.
My students may come to school with many things stacked against them, things that are out of their control, but they should be given the same experiences just like everyone else.
My students are readers. Readers are leaders.
3rd graders need to see themselves in books.
Many of the cultures and ethnicities within my classroom are not represented in the classroom books we currently have in our classroom library.
I would love to add books to our classroom library about my students. Books about people that look like my students. Books about cultures and places in the world that they are curious about. Books about families like the families of my students. And books with brilliant color and well known stories.
