Public School 31 is located in Staten Island, NY. It is a Title 1 elementary school and has a large minority student population from predominantly low-income families. Our students face the challenges of poverty, high crime rates, adult illiteracy, transience and single parent families. Low literacy achievement has predominated in our environment. Research indicates that when parents are actively involved in their children's education the children do better in school. Parents want the best for their children, but in many cases don't know how to help. I aim to involve my parents in meaningful ways and to provide them with materials to help their children at home. Since many of my students lack books to read at home I am asking for durable plastic "Book Buddy Bags" so I can supply books for students to borrow and share with their families. Giving families a chance to be involved in the learning that goes on each day at school will help to build strong support and communication and lead to success for all. The bags will help to protect the books as they travel from home to home. They will also help to make borrowing special by motivating children to take care of their bagged book and return it so another classmate can share it with his family.
