My students need plush storybook characters to enjoy while reading books during story time.
Snuggling up with a good book and reading for a pleasure is a goal we have for all children. Preschool students enjoy holding cuddly characters that match their favorite books. I'm hopeful that by providing these special friends, I will inspire a greater love for literature in my young students.
We are a small, rural village in remote Alaska.
My students are four-years old and attend the local Head Start program. We have access to larger cities only via airplane, so our students are quite isolated. My young students LOVE story time, especially when we can bring in tangible items to help them connect to the characters (i.e. puppets, props, etc..).
Many of our students come from homes which are not literacy-rich, so being read to is new for them. This program could help books "come to life" for my young learners. Having something to hold during story time also increases attention span for many children. I'm hopeful that the characters will provide many opportunities for dramatic play in our centers, as the students will use them to re-tell and act out familiar and well-loved stories.
Our budgets are small and often only allow for the necessary materials.
This program would allow me to purchase something additional to enrich my literacy program. The tangible connection of character to story will enhance their ability to use and appreciate books, interact during read alouds and book conversations and retell stories.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
