Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a low income/high poverty middle school in the heart of San Francisco. The majority of our student body is Latino who arrive bright and early every morning.
As an English teacher I hear so many of their stories.
Homelessness, deportation, even murder have been in the narrative of their lives and yet they still manage to get up every morning and come to school. I admire them, they are my heroes and I always try to do my best for them because they deserve nothing less than that.
My Project
The goal is to show students that reading can be just as entertaining as playing Fortnight. I have 8 tables in my classroom that sit 4 students each. On each individual table, I have placed a square bucket that I plan to put four of the same book titles in. Students will have 23 days to read the book at their table before I rotate that title to the next bucket/table. Students will then be able to conduct their own book group at each table throughout the school year. I have selected titles that I feel they will enjoy, or that have been recommended by former students and current colleagues.
