This is my first year teaching 5th grade and I am part of a fabulous magnet cluster school in Chicago with emphasis on Literature and Writing. Our school does not have a library, however, our classrooms are constantly being populated with books across all genres (from grants, budget, out-of-pocket). Our staff is constantly reading together on how to improve our libraries and reading experiences for our children. As research finds, the "old way" of arranging books spine-out is OUT! What benefits student exploration is books in baskets or buckets facing cover-out and arranged by genres, authors, or series and themes. This is the "IN" way! We have found this to be very inviting for students during Independent reading time. They know their way around the libraries and can have "adult" conversations if you will, about authors and comparing novels. Since I am new to this school, I don't have the buckets or baskets needed for all the books in my room. As a result, some are the "OUT", and some are the "IN" way! HELP! All of our areas are literature based, Science, Social Studies, & Math. Children can learn from the self-exploration of trade books rather than "Chapter 5, pg 89" in their text book. YUCK! I have the heart and the imagination to make my library an oasis for my children (I just finished creating a 6ft tree!) now all I need are the Buckets and Baskets!!
