My students need individual book boxes to achieve reading independence and to fully implement skills from the "Daily Five" curriculum.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every morning my students commit to a day of learning by stating our classroom pledge: "Today will be, and today is already, the best day I have ever had. I am excited about my life and my future success." It is my goal each day to help each student become a life-long reader and successful person.
The students in my classroom are very diverse in ethnicity and socioeconomic background.
Our school is inner city and faces some challenges due to the higher than average amount of students who suffer the effects of poverty. However, in our 4th grade classroom they are simply children who love to learn new things and truly want a better life for themselves. They surprise me each day with what they are capable of learning and what they already know.
This school year, I have begun to incorporate elements of the well known "Daily Five" reading curriculum by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. A huge part of the curriculum is to create life-long readers. Part of this process requires students to keep a book box with several books chosen by them. My job in this process is to teach the students how to choose books that are just right for them according to their reading level and interests. The students have been doing a wonderful job with this! However, due to a lack of funding, their "book boxes" have been shoe boxes the students brought in from home. The boxes have fallen apart numerous times and we continue to duct tape them back together. The students would be so thrilled to have new, sturdy book boxes that do not fall apart and that fit their books!
Having new book boxes in our classroom will help create life-long independent readers!
The boxes will also be used for many years to come for so many classes after this year. A gift that keeps on giving!
