My Students

I teach 2nd grade in a Title I School in South Sacramento, CA. My students are a very culturally diverse group of students. Nearly all of them receive free/reduced-priced breakfast and lunch. Many of my students suffer from trauma caused by a myriad of situations - drugs, homelessness, food insecurity, and instability at home. Yet even with all that these students deal with at home, they come to school ready to learn and smiles on their faces!

When I look at my students, I see unlimited possibilities, and I make sure they know that they are capable of anything they set their minds to.

My Project

My students this year love to read and they will pick reading over just about any other early finisher activity. While my classroom library has a lot of the classics, what it doesn't have are books about and written by people from more diverse backgrounds.

I want my students to be able to read about people who come from similar cultures, look like them and address issues that we are facing in this century.

I want to them to be able to have heros that are truly amazing people, not just internet celebrities. Many of these books reinforce themes of growth mindset and the power of yet - two philosophies that I teach daily in my classroom.
