My students need 5 new collections of books!!! Most of my students don't have access to books at home. Having books right in my classroom encourages my students to read.
How can you travel around the whole world without leaving your house? BOOKS! My students want to learn all they can about their world. Today's students need to read, read, read! They need to learn about the world and learn that science and social studies are all around us, not just in textbooks.
The students in our school may come from a high-poverty area, but that doesn't limit their desire to learn.
Our students love to learn and our teachers are great at making learning exciting. Our students are faced with various learning challenges and our teachers excel in finding new and creative ways to teach. Giving these students a world of books in their classroom helps to open the real world to them. They can read about adventures they may never have in real life. Many of my students have discovered that reading opens the world!
My Project
Although I will be teaching science and social studies, all teachers teach reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and writing. Those are components of all subjects. The fiction and non-fiction books I have selected will help my students dig deeper into the topics I teach. They can learn different viewpoints of the colonists during the revolution; they can debate the pros and cons of space exploration. These books will also encourage reading and the joy of learning. These books may inspire one of my students to do great things!
There are no words that can explain how important books are to learners; that is, all of us.
Imagine how your life would have been without books...no learning, no imagination, no vision. The "poverty-stricken" students in my classroom do not ever need to know they are "poverty-stricken," when we can provide real, meaningful experiences that books can provide.
