My students need books to read during independent reading time. These selections are based on surveys that I administered to the seventh-grade students before they went on summer break.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This upcoming school year, I will have forty-seven 8th grade students in my reading, writing, and social studies courses. We read novels, write, and analyze current events each day. My core instruction revolves around reading comprehension, writing, fluency, and vocabulary.
These students are intrinsically motivated to learn and to read, and I value every day that I get to teach them and to learn with them.
Our school community is small and tight-knit. The students give me so much joy, and I want them to have the best resources as they prepare for high school.
My Project
Before summer break, I administered a reading survey to the current seventh-grade/future eighth-grade students. I was looking to see which types of books they would enjoy reading next year.
Based on the survey results, I have chosen these books to add to our classroom library collection.
Students cited that they like comics, graphic novels, and also stories about real-life topics. I chose the Black Panther series, Ms. Marvel series, and Bone graphic novel series. For realistic fiction, I chose One for the Murphys, which has been a hit in the past. These are only some of the books that I hope to acquire for the upcoming school year, and I'm looking forward to sharing my love of reading with my new students.
