Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in our classroom would be where the students are doing a lot of collaborative work with partners. I complete a lot of mini-lessons with students and then give them time to work with a partner and work on their own independently.
The challenge facing my students is that they are 98% English language learners.
This means that they speak a different language at home. The listening center will help them build crucial skills that they need to become proficient with the English language.
My students are mainly Hispanic. They attend a school that is one of the language hubs in the district. All of the other schools send their students here if they are acquiring English. We provide special instruction as well as special teaching techniques that help students build their English language skills of both reading and writing.
My Project
These resources will help me to have a variety of book collections, such as the Magic Tree House series, in class that are at the students level of reading. We will use these books both in our Daily 5 and silent reading in class. This is where students travel through 5 centers to practice reading and writing. Daily 5 is a way that I can provide each group of students with specific instruction in the area of greatest need. English language learners need to practice reading a lot in order to become fluent in English themselves. These resources will enable me to give the students much needed extra help with learning to become fluent readers.
My project is so important because it gives my students the skills and strategies necessary to become successful later in life.
If they never learn how to read English, they will struggle to function as a productive member of society when they get older.
