Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day inside Fourth Grade Funky Town is very calming as we begin each day with classical, instrumental music. Students enter the room that is lit by natural, indirect lighting (we don't use our fluorescent bulbs). The atmosphere is calming and encourages a comfortable learning environment daily.
The students at our school come from all walks of life.
Poverty is a large part of our school that affects almost every student in some form or fashion in our school. My students don't let their unfortunate home lives get to them. They are kids right?! They come in full of energy every day and are generally happy to be hanging out with me all while learning. It is our goal daily to treat others with respect, to be responsible for our actions, and to be ready for learning. In having fun, we need resources. Our school does provide us with some resources being that it is a Title I school. I would like to implement more of a 21st century classroom experience for my class. Our world is constantly changing and we have to teach students to learn on a multi-faceted platform, so that students have the tools they need to learn effectively.
My Project
The book bins that we would like to purchase would be used for each student to keep their literacy materials organized and clean. Our goal would be for each student to have their own individual book bin to keep their reader's notebook, writer's notebook, guided reading books, and other literacy materials. We currently have to keep each table's materials all in one plastic basket. The students have to share the bucket instead of having their own. Students from poverty like and need to have ownership of their own belongings, since they have little for themselves at home. This would help to support my students to be responsible to keep up with their literacy materials. These book bins would be labeled with their student numbers and housed in their table cubbies.
This project will make a difference in my classroom, by helping each student have ownership in keeping up with their literacy materials.
Currently students are having to share materials, which poses problems when things go missing. Almost daily we are having to stop and search the buckets for classmates materials that have a hard time organizing their materials in a community area. Responsibility is one of our key goals in our classroom and this would facilitate this action daily.
