Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 21st century explorers of Las Vegas, who consistently show their special skills and talents through eight essential leadership habits. These habits include being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, listening first and talking second, and working as a team.
These scholars are enthusiastic readers and never take their learning for granted.
Many of my students come from low-income families and struggle with finding resources and supplies needed to reinforce concepts at home. They appreciate everything that is given to them, but above all else, they cherish the opportunity to receive a good education. I strive to ensure that my students come to school knowing they have a safe, fun and caring learning environment.
It brings joy to my heart to see the excitement on my students' faces when they open up a book. It takes them to a different place filled with new adventures and a world of ideas.
My Project
This year our school is using a new program where students are responsible for knowing their reading level and progress through the levels by reading and passing quizzes. In my classroom, I will support all students in the school by getting them excited about reading and making sure they know their reading levels. By having these book bins, I can organize my classroom library by levels so that students can easily find the book they need. This takes the guess work out of wondering if they are choosing a good fit book. So many times students will choose books that are either too easy or too difficult, making it hard for them to apply reading strategies effectively. Having students choose and read books that are in their zone of proximal development is crucial in helping them become better readers.
