Our happy, little classroom is comprised of 24 wonderful, bright, and enthusiastic first graders. Many are English Learners but are coming into first grade with strong language arts and math skills. We use SIPPS in first grade to help build our students into strong, capable, and confident readers. SIPPS is a guided reading program that helps with phonics and sight words. They practice letter sounds, digraphs, sight words, writing words and sentences, and reading passages. We meet every day at our small group table to become better readers!
My Project
Our classroom has an amazing and diverse selection of books. As new and curious readers, we love being able to choose our books based on our interests. Currently, our books are sorted by category, but we lack the organizational bins to accommodate them on our bookshelves.
Help us bring our incredible collection of books onto our bookshelves where we can read to ourselves, to our friends, and together.
These bins will allow us to organize our library by interests. We will finally be able to display all of our books, many of which are hidden away in a closet right now due to lack of organizational materials. The lights and tablet will help us with our reading groups so we can easily follow along with the story and practice sentence writing without wasting paper!
Students are given 30 minutes each day in which they can choose from different literacy activities. Two of these are read to self and read to someone else. I would love to emphasize these activities as we learn to read in first grade. Having books sorted, organized, and easy accessible will make this so much more enticing! The reading group materials will make groups more exciting and motivate us to become amazing readers!
