I have 25 students in my second grade classroom! Each student is so fun and unique in their own ways. We have tons of fun moving around the room from doing whole group instruction, partner discovery work, small group instruction, and individual work. Throughout the year we have had a couple new students come in and a couple students leave. My students have said goodbye to those students with complete sincerity and hello to our new ones with such kindness. The adoration and respect that they have for each other is unbelievable!
My kids favorite subject is reading.
They love the freedom to choose their own books based on their interests and abilities. We have lots of time in our day that we do silent reading and reading activities with our books.
My Project
Reading is such an integral part of my classroom! It is something that my students have truly started to enjoy with the help of buddy reading and listening to people read to them through technology. However, I want reading individually to be something that the enjoy also!
I believe that with the use of book bins and flashlights, my students will begin to effectively and enjoyably read individually.
The book bins will help the students keep their books corralled. Currently, my students are using gallon size bags. These have started to show some wear and have started to begin breaking. There are also many books that don't fit in those bags that my students really want to read also!
I am then hoping to incorporate the flashlights through "flashlight Friday." This is something that I participated in as a student when I was in elementary school and really enjoyed! It will be something that my students can look forward to throughout the week and also will be able to work towards for a reward on other days of the week! I am hoping that through the handiness of the book bins and the fun aspect of the flashlights, that my students will be eager to read to themselves!
