My students live in a diverse, high poverty community of central New Jersey. We are a Title I school. Many of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. A lot of them face issues at home, broken homes, or parents who work many hours just to pay the bills. With all the challenges they have, they still come to school with excitement and ready to learn. They love reading and learning about new things. I try to make my classroom a safe, warm, nurturing environment for the students to have the best chance at success.
My students need their own personal book bins in order to stay organized and take ownership of their materials. They are becoming stronger and more independent readers. We have worked hard on organizing our classroom library and have books leveled and also separated by subjects.
Have a gathering place like a book cart with individual bins is essential to maintaining growing student interest in our classroom library.
This project would also allow my students some flexible seating during independent or group time! The book bins would allow students to select appropriate leveled books and store them for our independent reading time. This would save time and energy having their books already selected and stored so they can use every minute available to read independently.
