My students need books from the battle of the books reading list so they can compete in the school competition, city qualifying battle, and the city championship.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Media Specialist at a school with approximately 650 students. These students are a mix of Mexican, Polish, African American and Caucasian individuals who come from the southwest side of our large city in Illinois. About 68% of the population is low income. Our students are participating in the CPS Elementary battle of the books program.
Our students love reading and are always looking for new books that they can relate to and that will help them learn about the world around.
The books initially benefit our 20-30 battle of the books students, but then all books are put in the library and will benefit hundreds of students.
My Project
This program turns non-readers into avid readers! In the beginning of the program, the students are a mix of avid readers to non-readers that want to be in the battle of the books program because their friends are. By the end, they all become readers that recommend these books to their friends because of the quality book selection.
It gives students that are unsure about what to read the chance to have quality literature, that they know will be good!
Reluctant chapter book readers start to read more because of these selections of books that connect to the students and help them learn about the world around them.
The students pictured in our class photo are the students that competed to win our school battle of the books, and competed in the city battle of the books competition.
