Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian at an elementary school that has a very high poverty rate. I have been a classroom teacher for 10 years, but this is my second year promoting literacy all day long!!! The children at my school are very diverse, coming from every great corner of our earth. I have all grades of children from Kindergarten to grade 8 coming to check out books from the library.
Our school would like to participate in the citywide "Battle of the Books". It is a competition where students read books on a list and then answer questions about the books. Teams earn points for answering the questions correctly and try to place in the top three. I have many students in a book club that would love to be in it, but we can not afford the books for the students to read.
Our Battle of the Books team needs books from the list to read. Our last year's team was so motivated to read all 20 books that they even got together afterschool at each other's homes to read together. It was so rewarding to see students so excited about reading!!!
Please help my students participate in Battle of the Books again this year by purchasing the books we need. My book club will be so very happy and you will be putting them on the road to being lifelong readers!!!
